About Cottageville

Jackson County Junior Fair

One of the most exciting things about Cottageville is that it hosts the annual Jackson County Junior Fair. This fair is a big event for young people in the area. It's a place where they can show off their projects and skills. The fairgrounds are located on land that used to be a "poor farm." This farm helped people in need a long time ago.

A Look at History

Cottageville has a rich history. A famous early settler named Michael Coleman was known as an "Indian fighter." He was killed and buried in this area. A special marker from the state of West Virginia tells his story.

For many years, Cottageville was a busy place. It had a wooden Grist Mill that was built in the 1840s. A grist mill grinds grain into flour. This mill worked full-time until 1930 and part-time until 1937. Sadly, the mill burned down in 1965, but its old foundation stones are still there.

In the early 1900s, Cottageville was a center for business. It had a bank, a newspaper, and many shops. There was even a tannery, which made leather, and a blacksmith. A railroad station on the B & O line connected Cottageville to other places.

However, over time, the community changed. When the mill closed and roads improved, people could travel more easily to bigger towns. The B & O railroad tracks were removed in the 1960s. Cottageville became a quieter place, but it still holds its history and community spirit.
