Cottiers is a unique place in Glasgow, Scotland. It's a theatre, a bar, and a restaurant all in one! This cool spot is inside a beautiful old building. It used to be a church back in the 1800s, known as Dowanhill Parish Church.

The Church's Early Days

The building that is now Cottiers was first built to be a church. It was for the Dowanhill United Presbyterian Church. A famous architect named William Leiper designed it. He used a style called Neo-Gothic. This means it looked like old Gothic churches from the Middle Ages.

Construction started in 1865. The first stone was laid on August 4, 1865. The church officially opened its doors on November 11, 1866. Later, in 1929, the church joined the Church of Scotland. It was then renamed Dowanhill Parish Church.

Amazing Art Inside

This historic building is home to some incredible art. You can see beautiful paintings called frescoes. There are also stunning stained glass windows. These artworks were created by an artist named Daniel Cottier.

The building was later renamed Cottiers in his honor. This happened after it stopped being a church and became a theatre.

From Church to Arts Centre

The church served its community until 1984. That year, the Dowanhill church group joined with another local church. They formed a new group called East Partick and Dowanhill Parish Church.

After the church closed, a group called the Four Acres Charitable Trust bought the building. They had a great idea! They decided to turn the old church into a theatre and an arts centre. It also became home to a bar and a restaurant. The building was carefully restored over many years, from the 1980s all the way to 2012. Today, Cottiers is a lively place for shows, food, and fun!
