Council Grove's Post facts for kids
Council Grove's Post was an important trading post located in Council Grove, Kansas. It was built along the famous Santa Fe Trail. This post was active for a few years, from about 1861 to 1864. It played a small part during the Civil War.
History of Council Grove's Post
Council Grove was a town with mixed feelings during the American Civil War. Most people in the area supported the Union (the North). However, some residents had family or friends in the South and supported the Confederacy.
In the spring of 1863, a group of Confederate fighters, called guerrillas, camped near Council Grove. The town felt threatened by them until they moved on.
Protecting the Santa Fe Trail
Union soldiers were stationed at Council Grove to help protect the Santa Fe Trail. This trail was a very important route for trade and travel. Native American groups sometimes attacked travelers along the trail.
The soldiers built a small fort called a blockhouse, likely in 1864. Troops were often sent to Council Grove, especially in 1864, to keep the trail safe.
The post at Council Grove continued to operate until at least September 1864. It probably closed soon after this, as there are no official reports about it after that date.
