Countryside was a small residential area in Johnson County, Kansas, USA. It became its own city on July 2, 1951. This happened when its residents decided to officially form a city under Kansas law.
Later, on December 3, 2002, the people living there voted to join with the nearby city of Mission, Kansas. The houses and streets of Countryside were originally built in an area called Mission Township, starting in 1937. Countryside stopped being a separate city on January 15, 2003. However, the original neighborhood group, Countryside Homes Association, Inc., is still active today.

What Was Countryside Like?
Countryside was about half a mile wide. It had 133 houses, mostly for middle to upper-class families. Its borders were Lamar Avenue to the west and Nall Avenue to the east. West 61st Street was to the north, and Shawnee Mission Parkway was to the south.
A grassy area on the south side of West 62nd Terrace looked out onto West 63rd Street. This street became a big four-lane road in 1960. In 1983, it was renamed Shawnee Mission Parkway. This change helped reduce confusion because the road had many different names and numbers before.
City Services and Uniqueness
Countryside relied on the city of Mission, Kansas, for police services. Fire protection was provided by Consolidated Fire District 2. Countryside did not have many commercial buildings or government offices. The only non-residential building within its borders was Trinity Lutheran Church.
The rules for properties in Countryside came from its own city laws. They also followed rules from the 1937 Countryside Homes Association. These rules were updated in 2016. Countryside was special because it was the first city in Johnson County to join with another city. This is different from being "annexed," which means a larger city just takes over a smaller area. It was also the first city consolidation in Kansas since the 1960s.
