History of Courtland
Courtland became an official town on March 30, 1871. This means it was given the legal right to govern itself.
However, on July 17, 1946, something unusual happened. The acting Governor, Fielding L. Wright, announced that Courtland was no longer a town. This was because it had not held a local election for more than two years.
The very next day, on July 18, the area was reorganized. It became known as a village instead of a town.
