Courtney Linford Lawes (born 23 February 1989) is an English professional rugby union player. He plays as a flanker, which is a key position in rugby. He used to play for the England national team and currently plays for the French club CA Brive. Courtney is known for his strong tackles and powerful playing style.

Early Life and Rugby Start
Courtney Lawes was born on 23 February 1989 in Hackney, England. When he was four years old, his family moved to Northampton. This is where his rugby journey truly began.
He went to Northampton School for Boys. Courtney also played for a local club called Northampton Old Scouts. This club has helped many famous rugby players get their start.
Club Career with Northampton Saints
Courtney Lawes spent most of his career with the Northampton Saints. He played for them for 17 years!
Starting Strong
He made his first team debut for the Saints in October 2007. This was during the 2007–08 season, which ended with his team getting promoted. The next season, he became known for his amazing tackles. One famous tackle was in the 2009 European Challenge Cup final.
Winning Trophies
In March 2010, Courtney helped the Saints win the Anglo-Welsh Cup. The next year, he played in the 2011 Heineken Cup Final, where Northampton finished second.
The 2014 season was a big one for Lawes and the Saints. They won two major titles!

- Then, they won their first ever Premiership title. This was a huge achievement for the club.
A Saints Legend
Courtney was a very important player for the Saints. In 2024, after 17 years, he announced he would be leaving the club to join Brive in France.

In his very last game for the Saints, Courtney was the captain. He led them to win their second English Premiership title in June 2024. This made him a true legend for the club.

Early Days with England
He played for England's Under 18 team and then the Under 20 team. In 2009, he helped the England Under 20 team reach the final of the 2009 IRB Junior World Championship.
In November 2009, Courtney made his debut for the senior England team. He was part of the squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
World Cups and Grand Slams
Courtney was chosen for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. He played in two games during that tournament.
In 2016, England won their first Grand Slam in over ten years. Courtney was a part of this winning team. He also scored his first international try in 2016 against South Africa. This was a special moment as it was his 50th game for England.
He was a key player in the 2019 Rugby World Cup. England reached the final but finished as runners-up. Courtney also helped England win the 2020 Six Nations Championship. In November 2021, he captained England for the first time.
After the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Courtney Lawes decided to retire from playing for England.
Playing for the British & Irish Lions
Courtney Lawes was also selected to play for the British & Irish Lions. This is a special team made up of the best players from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
In 2017, he toured New Zealand with the Lions. He played in two of the main test matches.
He was chosen again for the 2021 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa. He started all three test matches in that series.
