History of Cowlairs Football Club
How Cowlairs FC Started
Cowlairs F.C. began in 1876. It was formed by skilled workers from the Hyde Park and Cowlairs railway works. These works were in Springburn, an area important for Glasgow's railway industry. In its early days, Cowlairs was a smaller club. It was part of the Glasgow Football Association.
Playing in the Scottish Cup
The club first played in the Scottish Cup in the 1880–81 season. This is a big competition for Scottish teams. Cowlairs did well, reaching the fourth round. This showed they were improving as a team.
Playing in the English FA Cup
Cowlairs' reputation grew in the late 1880s. In 1886–87, they even played in the English FA Cup. This competition was open to Scottish clubs back then. Cowlairs won their first two matches. They beat Darwen Old Wanderers and Rossendale. They won against Rossendale with a huge score of 10-2 away from home!
In the third round, Cowlairs played against Rangers, another Glasgow team. They lost 3-2 in a tough game. The Scottish Football Association didn't like Scottish teams playing English professional clubs. So, Cowlairs did not enter the FA Cup again.
International Players from Cowlairs
During this time, some Cowlairs players were very good. Two of them even played for the Scotland national team.
- Tom McInnes played one game for Scotland in 1889.
- John McPherson played two of his nine Scotland games while at Cowlairs, in 1889 and 1890.
Joining the Scottish League
Cowlairs was one of the clubs that helped create the Scottish Football League. This was a big step for Scottish football. However, Cowlairs finished last in their first season, 1890–91. They even had four points taken away for using players who weren't allowed to play.
The club was also accused of paying players. This was not allowed in Scottish football at the time. Because of these issues, Cowlairs was not voted back into the top league. Leith Athletic took their place.
Scottish Cup Success and New Leagues
Even though they weren't in a league the next season, Cowlairs had their best run in the Scottish Cup. They reached the quarter-finals before losing to Celtic.
Before the 1892–93 season, Cowlairs joined the Scottish Football Alliance. They did very well and became champions! After this, they were chosen to join the new Division Two for the 1893–94 season.
Return to League Football
Cowlairs' return to league football started well. They finished second in Division Two that season, behind Hibernian. But they were not promoted to Division One. Clyde was promoted instead after a vote.
The club continued to have money and management problems. After finishing last in Division Two in 1894–95, they were voted out of the league again. They then left Springvale Park and went back to Gourlay Park. Cowlairs Football Club closed down in 1896.
Petershill Juniors formed in 1897. They are seen as a team that continued to represent the Springburn area.
