Cowpens is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. In 2020, about 2,023 people lived there. The town was officially started on February 20, 1880.

History of Cowpens
How Cowpens Got Its Name
The town of Cowpens got its name from a simple reason. In the past, there were special areas called "pens" where cattle were kept. These pens were located near where the town is today. So, people started calling the area "Cowpens."
The Famous Battle of Cowpens
Cowpens is very famous because of an important battle that happened there during the American Revolutionary War. This battle, called the Battle of Cowpens, took place on January 17, 1781. It was a big win for the American Patriot forces against the British troops. The British were led by a general named Banastre Tarleton.
Today, you can visit the place where the battle happened. It's called Cowpens National Battlefield. It's about 9 miles (15 km) north of the town, in Cherokee County. To honor this important battle, two ships in the U.S. Navy have been named USS Cowpens.
Cowpens Depot
The Cowpens Depot is an old train station building in the town. It was built in 1896. This building is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. This list helps protect special historical places.

Cowpens is located in a hilly area of South Carolina called the Carolina Piedmont region. It's about 9 miles (15 km) away from Spartanburg, which is the main city in the county.
