History of Coxen Hole
Early British Settlements
Long ago, in 1742, British people started living on Roatán island again. They rebuilt an old fort there. This was part of their plan to control more of the Caribbean coast. By 1775, these British settlements were quite strong on the island.
How Coxen Hole Started
Coxen Hole was founded in 1835. Several British families moved there from the Cayman Islands. The town is named after a famous pirate, Captain John Coxen. In the 1600s, over 5,000 pirates lived all over Roatán island.
When the British families came, they brought their enslaved people and their love for the sea. These people became a big part of the island's population. For a short time in the 1850s, the British empire made the Bay Islands a colony. However, they later gave the land to Honduras.
After the Bay Islands became part of Honduras, the British settlers changed their nationality to Honduran. Later, in the late 1800s, the fruit trade brought many Americans and Europeans to the area. Because of this, different types of English are still the main language in the Bay Islands.
