Craig Beattie (born 16 January 1984) is a Scottish former professional footballer. He played as a striker, which means he was a player who mainly tries to score goals.

He started his career at Celtic, a famous Scottish club. Later, he played for West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City. During his time at these clubs, he also went on loan to several other teams. After that, he played for many different clubs, mostly in Scotland, like Heart of Midlothian and Dundee.

Craig Beattie also played for his country, Scotland. He earned seven caps (played seven games) for the Scotland national football team and scored one goal. He also represented Scotland at younger age groups, like the Under-19 and Under-21 teams.

Starting Out: Youth Career

Craig Beattie began his football training at a young age. He trained with Heart of Midlothian when he was under 12 years old. After that, he joined Rangers as a schoolboy player.

Later, he moved to Celtic, another big club in Scotland. He joined their youth academy, which is like a special school for young football players.

Playing for Celtic

Beattie made his first team debut for Celtic when he was 19. This was in a UEFA Champions League qualifying game in August 2003. He also played his first league game soon after. In his first season, he played 17 games, even starting in a UEFA Cup match against Barcelona.

He scored four goals towards the end of the 2004–05 season. Because of his good performance, he was given a new three-year contract. In the 2005–06 season, he scored in three games in a row for Celtic, which was a special achievement. He scored seven goals in the first three months of that season.

Overall, he played 65 games for Celtic and scored 16 goals. Many of his appearances were as a substitute. His last game for Celtic was in the Scottish Cup final in May 2007, which Celtic won 1–0.

Time at West Bromwich Albion

On 3 July 2007, Beattie joined West Bromwich Albion, a team in the Championship (the second tier of English football). He signed a three-year contract. He scored his first three goals for the team in a friendly game against a Dutch club.

He made his official debut for West Brom in August 2007. A few days later, he scored his first official goal for the club in a League Cup match. In his first season, he played 26 games and scored four goals.

Later, he made his Premier League debut for West Brom in August 2008. He scored his first Premier League goal in December 2008 against Tottenham Hotspur. He played 41 games for West Brom and scored 7 goals in total.

Loan Spells from West Brom

While at West Brom, Craig Beattie also played for other teams on loan. This means he temporarily joined another club to get more playing time.

  • Preston North End: In March 2008, he joined Preston North End. He played two games but had to return early due to a muscle injury.
  • Crystal Palace: In September 2008, he moved to Crystal Palace for a month. He scored in his second game, helping them win a local derby match. He played 15 games and scored five goals for Crystal Palace.
  • Sheffield United: In February 2009, he joined Sheffield United on a three-month loan. He played 16 games, mostly as a substitute, and scored one goal. He also played in the play-off games to try and get promoted to the Premier League.

Playing for Swansea City

On 27 August 2009, Beattie joined Swansea City for £800,000. He signed a three-year contract. He scored his first goal for Swansea in October 2009. He also scored against his old club, West Bromwich Albion.

He scored his first goal at Swansea's home stadium, the Liberty Stadium, in November 2010. In December 2010, he scored two goals against Ipswich Town. He also scored the winning goal in a thrilling game against Middlesbrough, where Swansea came back from 3–1 down to win 4–3.

In October 2011, he went on loan to Watford to get more playing time after an ankle injury. He was released from his contract with Swansea in January 2012.

Craig Beattie joined Watford on loan in October 2011. He made his debut in November. He scored one goal for Watford in a 2–2 draw against Bristol City. He played four games for Watford before returning to Swansea.

Return to Scotland

After leaving Swansea, Beattie returned to Scotland.

  • Heart of Midlothian: In February 2012, he signed with Hearts until the end of the season. He quickly became a fan favourite. He scored his first goal for Hearts in a Scottish Cup game. He also scored against local rivals Hibernian. In the Scottish Cup Semi-Final, he helped Hearts beat Celtic and scored the winning penalty. He then played as a substitute in the final, where Hearts beat Hibernian 5–1. He played 9 games and scored 3 goals for Hearts.
  • St Johnstone: On 10 August 2012, he signed a one-year contract with St Johnstone. He made his debut in September 2012. However, he didn't get much playing time because of other strong strikers at the club. He left the club in January 2013 after only four appearances.
  • Barnet: In February 2013, Beattie signed for Barnet, an English team. He played five games but did not score any goals. He was released at the end of the season.
  • Dundee: Beattie joined Dundee in September 2013. He made his debut a few days later. He scored his first goal for Dundee in a 3–1 win. After a good start, he got a knee injury and was out for three months. After returning, he helped Dundee get promoted to the Scottish Premiership. He played 18 games and scored 5 goals for Dundee.

Later Career: Malta and More Scotland Clubs

  • Żebbuġ Rangers: In August 2014, Beattie signed with Żebbuġ Rangers in Malta. He played only one game there.
  • Ayr United: Soon after, in September 2014, he returned to Scotland and signed for Ayr United. He played 28 games and scored 6 goals for them.
  • Stirling Albion: In 2015, he joined Stirling Albion. He played 18 games and scored 3 goals before leaving in 2016.
  • Edinburgh City: In July 2016, Beattie signed for Edinburgh City. He spent two seasons with the club, playing 47 games and scoring 8 goals.
  • Elgin City: After leaving Edinburgh City, he signed for Elgin City in May 2018. He played 15 games before leaving the club in January 2019.

Playing for Scotland

Craig Beattie played for the Scottish national team. He made his first appearance for Scotland in September 2005. He scored his first goal for Scotland in a 2–1 win against Georgia in March 2007. In total, he played seven games for Scotland between 2005 and 2007 and scored one goal.
