Craig Wilson, born on November 28, 1964, is a former professional baseball player from the United States. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB), which is the highest level of professional baseball, for parts of five seasons between 1989 and 1993. He was known as a "utility player," meaning he could play many different positions on the field, including third base, second base, and in the outfield.
Growing Up and Starting Baseball
Craig Wilson was born in Annapolis, Maryland. His parents were Bernice and Calvin. When he was in high school, he attended Annapolis High School. There, he was a talented athlete, playing both high school football and baseball.
After high school, Craig had a big decision to make. He was offered a scholarship to play college football at Howard University. However, he chose to play college baseball instead. He decided to attend Anne Arundel Community College to continue his baseball journey.
Playing Professional Baseball
In 1984, Craig Wilson was chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 20th round of the 1984 Major League Baseball Draft. This is how professional teams pick new players. He spent several years playing in the Cardinals' minor league system, which are teams at lower levels of professional baseball.
Craig finally made it to the Major League level with the Cardinals in 1989. He played for them until 1992. After the 1992 season, Craig was part of a trade. He and another player, Félix José, were traded to the Kansas City Royals. In exchange, the Cardinals received Gregg Jeffries and a minor league player.
Craig played one season for the Kansas City Royals in 1993. After that season, he became a free agent, which means he was free to sign with any team he wanted. He played two more seasons in the minor leagues before deciding to retire from baseball after the 1995 season.
After His Baseball Career
After retiring from playing, Craig Wilson stayed involved with baseball. He became an assistant baseball coach at his old high school, Annapolis High School. He also worked as a head coach at The Key School.
In 2003, Craig made a brief comeback to professional baseball. He played 14 games in the Mexican League for a team called the Guerreros de Oaxaca. However, he retired again shortly after.
