Craigerne is a special old house located at 101 Windsor Road in Red Hill, Brisbane, Australia. It was built in 1868. This historic home is so important that it was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992.

The Story of Craigerne
Who Owned Craigerne?
The land where Craigerne stands was first owned by William McFarlane in 1864. In 1866, he sold the land to William McCallum Park. Mr. Park was a stonemason and builder. He divided the large property into 20 smaller blocks and even created Park Street! He kept three blocks for himself, where Craigerne was built.
The first person listed as living in the house was Major Walter Snelling, from 1885 to 1887. After him, Mr. Park's father, Andrew, moved in. In the early 1890s, the property went to the Queensland National Bank due to financial reasons.
Changes Over the Years
In 1915, a lawyer named Herbert Hemmings bought Craigerne. After he passed away in 1940, the house was sold again. In 1950, it was changed into several separate apartments, called flats.
Later, in 1979, C.A. and Z.W. Wilczynski bought the house. They worked hard to bring Craigerne back to its original look. This process is called restoration. The house was sold again in 1985, and some more changes were made then.
What Craigerne Looks Like
Craigerne is a two-story stone house. It's built in a style called Colonial Georgian. This means it has a simple, balanced design. It looks the same on both sides. The front and back porches have pretty cast-iron railings.
The outside walls are made of stone. The front has smooth, cut stones, while other parts use rougher stones. The roof is shaped like a pyramid and is made of corrugated iron. The tall windows have shutters, and the porch roof curves gently.
Inside the House
Even though it looks like a single-story house from the street, the land slopes. This allows for a second floor underneath! Each floor has two rooms on either side of a central hallway. On the upper floor, the two rooms on the northern side can be joined by folding doors. The original kitchen was downstairs.
There are four chimneys, and each of the eight rooms has a fireplace. The inside walls are made of brick with plaster over them. All the ceilings are made of lath and plaster, and the wooden parts, like doors and frames, are made of strong cedar wood. The house is generally simple inside and out, without too many fancy decorations.
Quality and Restoration
Craigerne was built very well, using excellent materials. In the 1980s, it was carefully restored. Experts helped bring back its original colors and even recreated the beautiful railings.
A new two-story building has been added to the right side of the house. It's connected by a covered walkway on the upper level. This new building was designed to match the old house.
The Front Fence
The front of the property, facing Windsor Road, has a strong wrought-iron fence with brick posts. This fence seems to be as old as the house itself!
