Craigleith is an area in the west of Edinburgh, Scotland. Its name comes from old words meaning 'rock' or 'hill' of Inverleith. This area is found between Ravelston Dykes, Crewe Toll, and Ferry Road. It also borders Comely Bank to the east. Important roads like Queensferry Road and Craigleith Road run through it.
Craigleith is home to several private schools. These include Stewart's Melville College and The Mary Erskine School. You can also find the Royal Victoria Hospital near Craigleith Road. The Western General Hospital on Crewe Road opened in 1868. It was first known as the Craigleith Hospital.

What Was Craigleith Quarry?
Craigleith Quarry was a very important place for over 300 years. It was active from 1615 until 1942. A quarry is a large pit where stone is dug out of the ground.
The Amazing Craigleith Sandstone
The stone found here was called Craigleith sandstone. This stone formed about 350 million years ago! It was very strong and lasted a long time. Because of this, builders loved to use it.
Famous Buildings Made from Craigleith Stone
Many famous buildings in Edinburgh were built with Craigleith sandstone. These include parts of Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. The stone was used in both the Old Town and New Town of Edinburgh. Even the statue on Nelson's Column in London is made from this stone!
Other Uses for the Stone
Because it was so hard, Craigleith Sandstone was also used to make special cutting tools. These tools helped create beautiful cut glass during the Victorian era.
The Quarry's Peak and Future
At its busiest, Craigleith Quarry was the largest and most productive quarry in Edinburgh. After it closed, the quarry was filled in. In 1995, the Craigleith Retail Park was built on top of it. You can find this shopping area where Queensferry Road and Craigleith Road meet.
