Cranswick plc is a big food company in the United Kingdom. They make and sell many fresh and tasty food products. You can find their shares on the London Stock Exchange, which means it's a public company. Cranswick is also part of the FTSE 250 Index, which lists 250 of the largest companies on the London Stock Exchange.
How Cranswick Started
Cranswick was started in 1972 by Jim Bloom, Mike Field, and 21 other farmers. They were from a place called East Riding of Yorkshire. At first, they just made food for pigs, and their company was called Cranswick Mill.
Later, the company started making food for people too. In 1985, Cranswick's shares were first sold on the London Stock Exchange. This meant anyone could buy a part of the company.
In 1993, Cranswick tried something new and started making pet products. They bought a company called George Buckton. But in 2009, they sold their pet products business.
Cranswick then went back to focusing on pigs. In 2013, they bought two companies, East Anglian Pigs Limited and Dent Ltd. This helped them raise their own British pigs again.
Cranswick has grown a lot by buying other companies and then making those parts of the business even better. They work with special food makers to offer high-quality products to many people. Today, Cranswick has 12 factories across the UK.
In 2016, Cranswick sold a company called The Sandwich Factory Holdings Ltd to another company, Greencore, for £15 million.
What Cranswick Has Bought
Cranswick has grown by buying other food companies over the years. Here are some of the companies they have bought:
- 2001: Continental Fine Foods
- 2003: The Sandwich Factory
- 2005: Perkins Chilled Foods
- 2006: Delico, a company that makes cooked meats
- 2009: Bowes of Norfolk
- 2012: Kingston Foods, another cooked meats business
- 2013: East Anglian Pigs Ltd and Dent Ltd, which are businesses that raise pigs
- 2014: Benson Park, a company that makes premium cooked chicken
- 2016: CCL Holdings Limited and Crown Chicken Limited, big chicken producers
- 2016: Dunbia Ballymena, a company that processes pork in Northern Ireland
- 2019: Katsouris Brothers, a London company that makes Mediterranean food
- 2021: Ramona's Kitchen, which makes plant-based dips, and Atlantica UK, which imports food from other countries
What Cranswick Makes
Cranswick makes many different kinds of food products. These include fresh pork, special sausages, cooked meats, air-dried bacon, premium cooked chicken, charcuterie (like cured meats), sandwiches, and fancy pastry products.
Cranswick also has its own food brands, such as Bodega, Weight Watchers, Woodall's, Simply Sausages, Red Lion Foods, and The Black Farmer.
Most of Cranswick's sales are in the UK. However, they are also growing their business by selling products to other countries. They export food to Europe, the United States, and countries in South East Asia.
In 2021, Cranswick bought two smaller companies that make plant-based food. These were Ramona's Kitchen and Atlantica UK. This helped Cranswick offer more non-meat products, as this type of food is becoming very popular.
