Scientific classification

The Craugastor olanchano is a special kind of frog. It belongs to a group of frogs called Craugastoridae. This frog is quite unique because it is found only in Honduras, a country in Central America. When an animal or plant is found only in one specific place, we say it is endemic to that area.

This frog lives in very specific places. Its natural habitats are warm, wet montane forests (forests on mountains) and near rivers. These forests are often called subtropical or tropical moist forests because they get a lot of rain and are warm all year round.

About the Olancho Robber Frog

The Craugastor olanchano is also known as the Olancho Robber Frog. It got its name because it was first found in the Olancho region of Honduras. Like many frogs, it plays an important role in its ecosystem, often eating small insects and being a food source for other animals.

Where Does It Live?

This frog prefers to live in high places, specifically in the mountains of Honduras. It needs the moist, warm air and the clean water from mountain rivers to survive. These forests are full of different plants and animals, making them rich and diverse homes for many creatures.

Why Is It Endangered?

Sadly, the Olancho Robber Frog is in big trouble. It is listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This means there are very few of these frogs left in the wild, and they are at an extremely high risk of disappearing forever.

The main reasons this frog is endangered are:

  • Habitat Loss: The forests where it lives are being cut down for farming, logging, and building. When its home disappears, the frog has nowhere to live.
  • Pollution: Water pollution from human activities can harm the rivers and streams where the frogs live and breed.
  • Climate Change: Changes in weather patterns, like less rain or more extreme temperatures, can also affect its sensitive habitat.
  • Disease: A fungal disease called chytrid fungus has also caused problems for many frog species around the world, including some in Central America.

Protecting the Olancho Robber Frog

Scientists and conservation groups are working to protect the Olancho Robber Frog and its habitat. This includes setting up protected areas where the forests cannot be destroyed and trying to reduce pollution. Every effort to protect these unique frogs helps keep our planet healthy and diverse.
