Scientific classification

Crepis biennis is a type of flowering plant found in Europe. It's often called Rough Hawksbeard. This plant belongs to the daisy family, just like sunflowers and, yes, dandelions! Many people think Rough Hawksbeard plants are dandelions because they look so similar. This is because both plants are part of the same big daisy family.

Rough Hawksbeard is originally from Europe and a part of Asia called Asia Minor. But it has also spread to other places. You can now find it growing naturally in some areas of the northeastern United States. It also grows on the island of Newfoundland in eastern Canada.

What is Rough Hawksbeard?

Crepis biennis is a perennial herb. This means it's a plant that lives for more than two years. It can grow quite tall, sometimes reaching up to 120 centimeters (about 48 inches). That's almost as tall as a grown-up!

Its Flowers

One Rough Hawksbeard plant can grow many small flower heads. Each plant might have as many as 14 of these flower heads. Each head is packed with tiny yellow flowers. These tiny flowers are called ray florets. A single flower head can have up to 100 ray florets! Unlike some other daisy family plants, Rough Hawksbeard does not have disc florets in the center of its flower heads.
