History of Crichton
Crichton started as a special kind of town in 1921. It was built by Walter Crichton for the workers of a nearby coal mine. This type of place is called a "company town."
The Johnstown Coal and Coke Company
The town and the mine were part of a bigger company called Johnstown Coal and Coke. This large mining company had its main office in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Walter Crichton's brothers, Harry and Andrew, started the company in 1912.
Mining in West Virginia
The mine in Crichton was the first of many mines that Walter Crichton helped open. He was in charge of expanding the company's mining operations. They grew into different parts of West Virginia and western Maryland.
The Mine Closes
The coal mine in Crichton stopped operating in 1951. A few years later, in 1959, the Johnstown Coal and Coke company completely closed down all its operations.
Crichton Today
Even though the mine closed a long time ago, Crichton is still home to people. About 100 residents live there today. The community also has an elementary school.
