Cristóvão de Moura (born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1538 – died in Madrid, Spain in 1613) was an important Portuguese nobleman. He played a big role during a time when Portugal was trying to decide who its next king would be in 1580. He supported the Spanish side in this important event.

About Cristóvão de Moura

Early Life and Family

Cristóvão de Moura's father was D. Luís de Moura. He was a chief equerry, which means he was in charge of horses for a prince named Infante Duarte. His mother was D. Brites de Távora.

Working for Spain

Cristóvão moved to Spain in 1554. He was very smart, and Philip II of Spain asked him to help convince Portuguese nobles to support Spain. At this time, Portugal was looking for a new king. Cristóvão worked to get important people in Portugal to agree that the Spanish king should also rule Portugal.

After Philip II became the King of Portugal, Cristóvão de Moura was given an important job. He joined the Council of Portugal. This was a group of five people who gave advice to the king about how to govern Portugal and its many lands around the world.

Rewards and Titles

The king rewarded Cristóvão for his loyalty and hard work. He became the Comptroller of the Exchequer, which meant he managed the king's money. Later, in 1594, he was given the title of the first Count of Castelo Rodrigo.

When Philip II's son, Philip III of Spain, became king, he gave Cristóvão an even higher title. In 1600, Cristóvão became the first Marquis of Castelo Rodrigo.

Viceroy of Portugal

King Philip III also made Cristóvão de Moura the Viceroy of Portugal. A viceroy is like a governor who rules a country or region as the king's representative. Cristóvão served as Viceroy three times:

  • From January 1600 to 1603
  • Again for a short time in 1603
  • From February 1608 to 1612

Many Portuguese people did not like Cristóvão de Moura's rule. One reason was that he introduced higher taxes, which made life harder for them.

Marriage and Family

In 1581, Cristóvão de Moura married Margarida Corte-Real. She was an heiress from Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira Island in the Azores. Their marriage agreement said that their children would use the last name Corte-Real.

Cristóvão's Children

Cristóvão de Moura had several children with his wife, Margarida Corte-Real:

  • D. Manuel de Moura Corte Real: He became the 2nd Marquis of Castelo Rodrigo after his father.
  • D. Margarida Coutinho: She married D. Manrique de Silva, the 1st Marquis of Gouveia. They did not have any children.
  • D. Maria de Mendonça: She married D. Afonso de Portugal, who was the 5th Count of Vimioso and 1st Marquis of Aguiar.
  • D. Beatriz de Moura: She married Fernando Afán de Ribera, the 3rd Duke of Alcalá de los Gazules.

He also had a child with Ana Afonso:

  • Inês Afonso de Moura
