Cristian Miguel Riveros Núñez (born October 16, 1982) is a former professional footballer from Paraguay. He played as a defensive midfielder, which means he helped protect his team's goal.
Cristian Riveros was a key player for the Paraguay national team from 2005 to 2018. He played in 101 international matches for his country. He also took part in two FIFA World Cup tournaments (in 2006 and 2010) and three Copa América tournaments (in 2007, 2011, and 2015). In 2015, a newspaper in Paraguay called him the most expensive player in the country.
Playing for Clubs
Starting His Career
Cristian Riveros began his football journey in his hometown with a team called Cristobal Colón. After that, he played for other Paraguayan clubs like San Lorenzo and Tacuary. Later, he joined Libertad, which is a well-known team in Paraguay.
Playing in Mexico: Cruz Azul
On July 12, 2007, Cristian Riveros moved to Mexico to play for the club Cruz Azul. He spent three years playing for this team.
Time in England: Sunderland
In May 2010, Riveros signed a three-year contract with Sunderland, a team in the English Premier League. He was very excited to join, saying the Premier League was the best in the world.
He played his first Premier League game on August 14, 2010. However, he didn't play many games for Sunderland, only 14 league matches. He scored one goal for the team in a 3–0 win against West Ham United.
Playing in Turkey: Kayserispor
In July 2011, Riveros went to Turkey to play for Kayserispor on a loan from Sunderland. A year later, in May 2012, he signed a permanent contract to stay with Kayserispor.
Playing in Brazil: Grêmio
On June 7, 2013, Cristian Riveros joined Grêmio, a big club in Brazil. He signed a two-year contract with them.
Returning to Paraguay: Olimpia Asunción
In January 2015, Riveros returned to Paraguay to play for Olimpia Asunción. He was a very important player for Olimpia. His experience and leadership helped the team win their 40th local championship.
Back to Libertad
On December 7, 2017, it was announced that Riveros would sign a two-year contract with Libertad. This was his second time playing for the club, returning after 11 years.
Playing for Nacional Asunción
For the 2020 season, he joined another Paraguayan team, Nacional Asunción.
Third Time at Libertad
On January 18, 2022, Riveros made another move back to Libertad. This was his third time playing for the club in his career. He joined other famous Paraguayan players like Oscar Cardozo and Roque Santa Cruz at Libertad.
International Career for Paraguay
Cristian Riveros played in Paraguay's first two matches at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He scored his first international goal for Paraguay in a game against Chile in 2006. He also played for Paraguay in the Copa América 2007.
2010 FIFA World Cup
In May 2010, Riveros was chosen to be part of Paraguay's team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
During the World Cup, on June 20, 2010, Riveros scored a goal in a 2–0 win against Slovakia. Later in the tournament, in the Round of 16, Paraguay played against Japan. The game ended in a tie, so it went to a penalty shootout. Riveros scored a penalty kick, helping Paraguay win and move forward in the competition.
