Cristian Miguel Riveros Núñez, born on October 16, 1982, is a famous former football player from Paraguay. He played as a defensive midfielder, which means he helped protect his team's goal.

He played for the Paraguay national team from 2005, representing his country 101 times! He even played in two FIFA World Cup tournaments (in 2006 and 2010) and three Copa América tournaments (in 2007, 2011, and 2015). In 2015, a newspaper in Paraguay called ExtraPRESS said he was the most valuable player in the country.

Club Football Journey

Starting Out in Paraguay

Cristian started his football journey with a local team called Cristóbal Colón in his hometown. After that, he played for other Paraguayan teams like San Lorenzo and Tacuary. Later, he joined Libertad.

Playing in Mexico with Cruz Azul

In 2007, he moved to Mexico and joined the football club Cruz Azul.

Time in England with Sunderland

In 2010, Cristian joined Sunderland, a team in England's top league, the Premier League. He was very excited, saying the Premier League was the best in the world. He hoped to be very successful with Sunderland and meet their passionate fans.

He played his first Premier League game in August 2010. However, he didn't play many games for Sunderland, only 14 in the league. He scored his only goal for the club in a 3–0 win against West Ham United at the end of the season.

Moving to Turkey with Kayserispor

In 2011, Riveros went to Turkey to play for Kayserispor on a loan from Sunderland. A year later, in 2012, he signed a permanent contract with them.

Playing in Brazil with Grêmio

In 2013, Cristian joined Grêmio, a big club in Brazil, where he signed a two-year contract.

Returning to Paraguay with Olimpia

In 2015, after many talks, Cristian joined Olimpia Asunción in Paraguay. He was a very important player for Olimpia. His experience and leadership helped the team win their 40th local championship!

Back to Libertad and Nacional

In 2017, Cristian returned to Libertad, a club he had played for 11 years earlier. He signed a two-year contract. In 2020, he moved to Nacional Asunción.

Third Time with Libertad

In 2022, Cristian joined Libertad for the third time in his career. He was one of three players in Libertad's team who had played in a FIFA World Cup, along with Oscar Cardozo and Roque Santa Cruz.

International Football Career

Cristian Riveros played in Paraguay's first two matches at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He scored his first goal for Paraguay in a friendly game against Chile in 2006. He also played for Paraguay in the Copa América 2007.

2010 FIFA World Cup

In May 2010, he was chosen to be part of Paraguay's team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

During the World Cup, on June 20, 2010, Riveros scored a goal in Paraguay's 2–0 win against Slovakia. Later, in the Round of 16, he scored a penalty kick in Paraguay's win against Japan. The game had ended in a tie after extra time, so it went to a penalty shootout.
