Cristina Bermúdez facts for kids
Cristina Bermúdez (born around 982, died between 1051 and 1067 in Cornellana) was a princess, also known as an infanta, from the Kingdom of León. She was the daughter of King Bermudo II of León and his first wife, Queen Velasquita Ramírez.
Cristina's father, King Bermudo, later ended his marriage with her mother. He then married Elvira García, and they had children, including King Alfonso V of León and two princesses named Teresa and Sancha Bermúdez. After her parents' marriage ended, Cristina left the royal court in León with her mother. They moved to Asturias to live.
Cristina's Family Life
Around the year 1000, or a bit later, Cristina married Ordoño Ramírez. He was the son of King Ramiro III of León. This marriage was likely encouraged by her mother, Queen Velasquita, and the widowed Queen Teresa Ansúrez. Both queens were living at the Monastery of San Pelayo in Oviedo at the time.
Cristina and Ordoño had several children. Their family became very important in Asturias during the 11th century. Their children were:
- Alfonso
- Aldonza
- Ordoño
- Pelaya Ordóñez (also known as Doña Palla)
Records from different monasteries in Asturias, like the Monastery of the Holy Savior in Cornellana and the Cathedral of Oviedo, confirm the names of her children.
Her Later Years and Legacy
Cristina became a widow by 1024. In that year, she made a special gift to help start the Monastery of Cornellana. She probably died between 1051 and 1067. She was likely buried at the monastery she helped found, where she had also become a nun.
Years later, a count named Suero Vermúdez, who was Cristina's great-grandson, bought all the family shares in the monastery. He first gave the monastery to the Abbey of Cluny, but then changed his mind. He later gave it to the Cathedral of Oviedo.
