The Cristo de Tacoronte is a famous statue of Jesus Christ. It shows Jesus holding the cross. You can find this special statue on the main altar of the Santuario del Cristo de Tacoronte. This church is in Tacoronte, a town on the island of Tenerife. Tenerife is one of the Canary Islands in Spain. The Cristo de Tacoronte is considered the patron saint of the town.

About the Statue

This beautiful sculpture is believed to have been made by an artist named Domingo de Rioja. It is one of the most respected religious statues in the Canary Islands. In fact, it is the second most famous image of Jesus Christ there, after the Cristo de La Laguna. The statue arrived in Tenerife from Madrid in the year 1661. It was brought to the island by a person named Tomás Perera de Castro.

Celebrations and Festivals

People celebrate the Cristo de Tacoronte with special events throughout September. The most important day is September 14. This day is called the Day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Another big day is the Octave of Christ. This happens on the Sunday after September 14, usually around September 23. A very large procession takes place on this day. Many people from all over Tenerife and other Canary Islands come to join. The Cristo de Tacoronte also takes part in processions during Holy Week. It is carried out on the night of Palm Sunday with the Virgin of Sorrows. It also appears alone on the morning of Resurrection Sunday.
