Tacoronte is a city and municipality located on the beautiful island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. It is found in the northeastern part of the island. This area is mostly rural, meaning it has lots of open land and farms. It stretches about 30 square kilometers from the tall volcanic mountains in the island's center all the way to the Atlantic Ocean coast. The main town, also called Tacoronte, is about 16 kilometers west of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is the capital city. Here, you can find old, grand houses and farms. The region is also famous for its vineyards, which produce a special wine called Tacoronte-Acentejo.

The Name and History of Tacoronte

What Does Tacoronte Mean?

The name Tacoronte comes from the Guanches, who were the original people of the Canary Islands. It is believed to come from the word Tagoror. This word means "place where the Council of Elders meets." This suggests it was an important meeting spot long ago.

Ancient Guanche Kingdom

Before the Spanish arrived, Tacoronte was part of an ancient Guanche kingdom. These kingdoms were called menceyatos. The menceyato of Tacoronte was ruled by a leader named Acaymo.

Spanish Arrival and Growth

After the Spanish took over Tenerife, a Portuguese settler named Sebastián Machado came to the area. He started the town of Tacoronte around a small church he built. This church was dedicated to Santa Catalina. Over many centuries, the town grew bigger and more important. In 1911, Alfonso XIII of Spain, who was the King of Spain at the time, officially made Tacoronte a municipio. A municipality is like a local government area.
