Cristo de la Concordia (which means Christ of Peace) is a giant statue of Jesus Christ. You can find it high up on San Pedro Hill, just east of Cochabamba, a city in Bolivia. It's super tall, reaching 40.44 metres (132.7 ft) from the ground to the top! You can get there by taking a fun cable car ride or by climbing about 2,000 steps.
Building the Giant Statue
Work on this amazing statue started on July 12, 1987. It took several years to build, finally finishing on November 20, 1994. Two brothers, César and Wálter Terrazas Pardo, designed it. They got their idea from the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro.
The statue stands 265 metres (869 ft) above the city of Cochabamba. This means it's really high up! It weighs about 2,200 tonnes (2,200,000 kg), which is super heavy. The head alone is 4.64 metres (15.2 ft) tall and weighs 11,850 kilograms (26,120 lb). The arms stretch out wide, spanning 32.87 metres (107.8 ft).
When it was finished, Cristo de la Concordia was the largest statue of Jesus Christ in the world. It was even bigger than the one in Rio! There are 1,399 steps inside the statue. These steps lead to a special viewing area inside the arms. However, you can only go up these steps on Sundays.
How Big is it?
This statue is one of the biggest in the world. It's slightly smaller than Christ the King in Świebodzin, Poland. But it's taller than the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In the Southern Hemisphere, it's the third-largest statue. The other two are the Virgen de la Paz statue in Venezuela and the Saint Rita of Cascia statue in Brazil. The left hand of the Cristo de la Concordia points south, and the right hand points north.
