Croom is a small, quiet area in New South Wales, Australia. It's part of the bigger suburb called Dunmore, near the city of Wollongong. The name 'Croom' has been spelled a few different ways over time. It's named after a village in Ireland called Croom, which comes from an old Irish word meaning 'bend'.
Croom's History
A long time ago, in 1839, a large piece of land in Croom was given to Isabella Croker. The very next year, she sold it to a new settler named Ebenezer Russell.
Ebenezer Russell worked hard to clear the land. He built a home, stables for animals, a dairy farm, and even a mill. Some of these old buildings are still there today! Russell became an important person in the area. He even helped start the local government, the Shellharbour Municipal Council.
What's in Croom Today?
Today, Croom is mostly made up of farms. It's a rural area, meaning it has a lot of open land and not many big buildings.
In the north-west part of Croom, you'll find the Croom Sporting Complex and Shellharbour City Stadium. These are places where people can play sports and watch games. Croom will also be part of a new road project, the Princes Highway Albion Park Rail bypass, which will help cars get around more easily.
