Discovering Dunmore's Past
How Dunmore Got Its Name
A long time ago, much of what is now City of Shellharbour was part of a huge piece of land called the Peterborough Estate. This estate was given to a man named D'Arcy Wentworth in 1821. He was a former convict who became an important politician in the early days of the colony.
In 1865, a large part of this land was put up for sale. It stretched along the Minnamurra River. A local shop owner, George Lawrence Fuller, bought this land. He decided to name it Dunmore, which was the name of his hometown in Ireland. George Fuller's son, also named George, later became the leader (Premier) of New South Wales in 1921.
Early Industries and the Railway
George Lawrence Fuller was very important in starting the business of quarrying (digging up) basalt rock in the area. Basalt is a type of hard rock used for building roads and other structures.
Dunmore became well-known in 1887 because it was where the railway station was built. This station served the nearby seaside village of Shellharbour. For a while, the station was even called "Shellharbour." In 2014, the station moved from its original spot in southern Dunmore to be closer to Shellharbour's center. The new station is now called Shellharbour Junction.
Dunmore is also home to a large basalt quarry run by a company called Boral. This quarry started operating around 1900. In more recent times, Shellharbour Anglican College, a school, opened in Dunmore in 2004.
