The story of Cross Street Baptist Church began with an earlier building.
The First Chapel (1825)
The very first Baptist chapel on this spot was built in 1825. It was created by a group called the George Street Particular Baptist Church. Later, in the mid-1800s, this original building was sold to another Baptist group known as the Scotch Baptists of Park Street.
Building the Current Church (1909)
The church building you see today was designed by a skilled architect named William Herbert Higginbottom. Construction started in October 1908. The new church was officially opened on 18 February 1909. It cost about £900 to build back then, which would be a lot more money today! This new building was made to hold up to 250 people.
