Kids Encyclopedia Facts

CryptoLocker was a type of harmful computer program called ransomware. It first appeared in September 2013. This program would secretly get onto computers, often through email attachments or special networks called botnets.

Once on a computer, CryptoLocker would encrypt (or scramble) most of the files on the computer, including files on any connected devices. It used a strong method called RSA encryption to do this. After scrambling the files, it would show a message asking for money to unlock them.

What CryptoLocker Did

CryptoLocker would quickly scan a victim's computer for files that matched certain types, like documents, photos, or videos. It would then scramble these files so the owner couldn't open them.

The Ransom Message

After scrambling the files, CryptoLocker would display a window on the screen. This message would demand a ransom payment, usually 2 bitcoin, to get a special program that could unlock the files. It would give the user 72 hours (3 days) to pay this money.

What if You Didn't Pay?

If the user didn't pay the ransom within the 72-hour deadline, CryptoLocker would remove itself from the computer. However, it would then ask the user to download it again. If they did, the new demand would be much higher, usually 10 bitcoin instead of 2.

Later Developments

Eventually, a special program was created that could help people decrypt (or fix) their files without paying the ransom. This was a big help for many victims.
