Cuchillas is a small community, also called a barrio, located in the town of Moca, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 4,352 people lived there. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which is a commonwealth of the United States.

A Look Back at Cuchillas's History
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to be a territory of Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. After this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts in Cuchillas
In 1899, the United States government took a count of all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count was done by the United States Department of War. They found that the population of Cuchillas barrio was 1,552 people. This was one of the first official population records for the area.
