Culbertson is a small town in Roosevelt County, Montana, in the United States. In 2020, about 753 people lived there. It's a place with a rich history tied to railroads and farming.

History of Culbertson

Culbertson was founded in June 1887. This happened when the Great Northern Railway arrived in the area. The town got its name from Major Alexander Culbertson. He used to be in charge of American Fur Company's Fort Union, which was a trading post about 23 miles (37 km) east of the town.

When Culbertson was first settled, people mostly raised horses. These horses were for the US Cavalry, which had posts in Montana and Dakota. Later, as cattle prices improved, ranchers started raising cattle again. They used strong English breeds instead of the Texas longhorns that were common before.

Around 1909, new homestead laws were passed. These laws allowed farmers to claim larger areas of land. This brought many dryland farmers to the Culbertson area. Because it had a railroad, Culbertson became an important center for farming trade. After World War II, the farming boom ended. This caused a slow decline in businesses and population in Culbertson. However, the town still had a strong railroad presence, which helped it survive.

Culbertson also became a key town as smaller communities nearby disappeared. This happened during the farming struggles of the 1920s and 1930s. With better cars and roads, farmers and ranchers could live further away from the main trading centers.
