Cumbal is a large, cone-shaped stratovolcano in Colombia. It is made up of layers of hardened lava, ash, and rock. This volcano is located in the Nariño region, specifically in an area called the Nudo de los Pastos.
Cumbal is the southernmost active volcano in Colombia. It is one of the few volcanoes found in the Western Ranges of the Andes mountains. The rocks that make up Cumbal are mostly a type called andesite. Its last known eruption was in December 1926.
Aviation Incident
On January 28, 2002, an airplane called TAME Flight 120 had an accident near the volcano. The plane was trying to land in Tulcán, a nearby city. During its approach, the aircraft unfortunately hit one of the sides of the Cumbal volcano.
