State Michoacán

The Cupatitzio River is an important river located in the state of Michoacán, which is in the southwestern part of Mexico. It's known for its beautiful natural surroundings and is a key part of the local environment.

Where Does the Cupatitzio River Flow?

The Cupatitzio River begins its journey in a special place called Barranca del Cupatitzio National Park. This park is located in the city of Uruapan, also in Michoacán. The very start of a river is called its headwaters.

Amazing Waterfalls

Close to where the river starts, you can find two amazing waterfalls. The bigger one is called Tzararacua. There's also a smaller waterfall nearby, which is playfully named Tzararacuita, meaning "little Tzararacua". These waterfalls are popular spots for visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

River's Path to the Ocean

After leaving its source, the Cupatitzio River flows for some distance through the highlands of western-central Michoacán. It then mainly travels towards the south.

Eventually, the Cupatitzio River joins a much larger river called the Balsas River. The Balsas River then continues its journey until it finally empties into the vast Pacific Ocean. So, the water from the Cupatitzio River eventually makes its way to the sea!
