Curacoa Island (say it like KEWR-ə-sow) is a cool, quiet island located off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It's part of a group of islands called the Palm Islands group. The biggest island nearby is Great Palm Island, which is where the whole group gets its name. Curacoa Island is special because no one lives there! It's an uninhabited island, meaning it's a natural haven.

Discovering Curacoa Island
Curacoa Island is a small but interesting place. It covers about 4.8 square kilometers (that's about 1.85 square miles). Even though it's small, it's an important part of the Palm Islands group.
Its Original Name
The Aboriginal people, who are the original inhabitants of Australia, have their own name for this island. They call it Noogoo Island. This name has been used for a very long time.
Who Manages the Island?
Curacoa Island, along with nine other islands in the Palm Islands group, is part of the local government area known as the Aboriginal Shire of Palm Island. This means it's managed by the local Aboriginal community.
How It Got Its Name
The island got its name from a ship! It was named after a British warship called HMS Curacoa. This ship was very important back in the 1860s. It was the main ship of the Australia Station, which was a part of the British Navy that looked after the waters around Australia.
A Look Back in Time
In 1941, Curacoa Island was officially marked as an Aboriginal reserve. This was done so that it could potentially be used to expand the Palm Island Aboriginal Settlement, which was a community for Aboriginal people. However, even though it was set aside, the island was never actually used for this purpose. It has remained uninhabited ever since.
