The Story of Currie
Currie was named after Joseph Currie. He started a ranch there in 1885. The town began to grow because of an important discovery.
Copper and the Railroad
People found a lot of copper in a nearby town called Ely. This discovery led to the building of a railroad. The railroad connected Ely to the main Southern Pacific line at Cobre, Nevada. Currie was right in the middle of these two towns.
The first passenger train arrived in Currie on March 22, 1906. For many years, the railroad was very busy. Between 1906 and 1941, about 4.6 million passengers traveled through Currie by train!
End of an Era
The copper smelters in Ely were important for processing the copper. These smelters closed on June 20, 1983. The railroad stopped running passenger trains just one day later. This made Currie much quieter.
