Curtis Sumpter (born January 30, 1984) is an American professional basketball player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Delaware 87ers in the NBA G League. Sumpter played college basketball for the Villanova Wildcats. He later played professionally in several leagues.

Early Life and College Career

Curtis Sumpter grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He became a talented basketball player. He attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School. After high school, he joined the Villanova University team.

Success at Villanova

Sumpter was a key player for Villanova. During the 2004–05 season, he was named to the All-Big East second team. He also made the first team All-Philadelphia Big Five. He averaged 15.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. His strong play helped Villanova reach the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

Overcoming Injuries

Curtis faced a challenge during the 2005–06 season. He had a knee injury and had to take a "red-shirt" year. This meant he could not play but kept his eligibility. He returned for the 2006–07 season. He played very well and earned first team All-Big East honors.

Professional Playing Career

After college, Curtis Sumpter began his professional basketball career. He played for several teams in different countries.

Playing in Europe

On August 14, 2007, Sumpter signed with the Köln 99ers in Germany. He then played for other European teams. These included JA Vichy and Roanne Basket in France. He also played for BCM Gravelines and Dexia Mons-Hainaut in Belgium. Later, he returned to JA Vichy. In 2011, he played for Maroussi in Greece.

Playing in the United States

Sumpter also played in the United States. He joined the Tulsa 66ers for the 2011–2012 season. This team is part of the NBA G League.

Coaching Career

After his playing career, Curtis Sumpter moved into coaching. He became an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers. This was from 2013 to 2015. He is now an assistant coach for the Delaware 87ers. The 87ers are also in the NBA G League.

International Achievements

Curtis Sumpter has also represented the United States in international competitions.

  • 2004 FIBA Americas U20 Championship: He won a gold medal with the U.S. national team in Halifax.
  • 2011 Pan American Games: He earned a bronze medal with the U.S. national team in Guadalajara.
