History of Curtisville
How Curtisville Started
Curtisville was founded by a person named L.B. Colvin before the year 1859. Colvin built a sawmill here. A sawmill is a place where trees are cut into wood. He built it near the railroad tracks. He hoped to sell a lot of wood so that a train station would be built in Curtisville.
Early Businesses and Services
Around the same time, the first shops opened in Curtisville. A.B. Newman built the first shop on the east side of town. Cutting and selling wood was the main business in Curtisville for a long time. People could also find a blacksmith, who made things from metal.
Growth and Changes
In 1859, Curtisville got its own post office. Jacob Oldacre was the first postmaster, which is the person in charge of the post office. This post office stayed open until 1951.
A church group called Missionary Baptists started in Curtisville in 1860. They built a church building in 1861. In 1873, the land was measured and divided into smaller pieces called a plat. This helped organize the town. By 1914, about 200 people lived in Curtisville. The main business at that time was the Curtisville Tile and Brick Company, which made tiles and bricks.
