The Curutchet House is a famous building in La Plata, Argentina. It was designed by the well-known architect Le Corbusier. A doctor named Pedro Domingo Curutchet asked him to build it in 1948.
This special house has both a home and a small medical office. The office is on the ground floor. The building has four main levels. There is a cool courtyard between the house and the clinic. The front of the house faces the Paseo del Bosque park. It even has a special sun-shading feature called a brise soleil.
History of the House
Building the Curutchet House started in 1949. Another architect, Amancio Williams, helped supervise the work. The house was finished in 1953.
How It Was Designed
The Curutchet House shows off Le Corbusier's "five points of architecture". These were his main ideas for modern buildings. The house also has a cool ramp and a spiral staircase.
This house was very important for Le Corbusier. It showed how he could use his modern ideas. He mixed them with traditional Argentine house styles. This proved that modern buildings could fit well with older ones.
Inside the house, you can see amazing design. There's even a tree growing inside! The architects made sure the tree stayed there. It adds to the beauty of the house. Many parts of the house, like the terrace and kitchen, were designed in the 1950s. But they still look very modern today!
Bringing It Back to Life
The house was fixed up between 1986 and 1988. This was for Le Corbusier's 100th birthday. Argentina then called it a national landmark.
Today, the house is home to the architects' association of Buenos Aires. It's called the Colegio de Arquitectos. You can also visit the house and take tours.
In July 2016, the Curutchet House became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was listed along with sixteen other buildings by Le Corbusier. This means it's a very important place for everyone to protect.
In Movies
- The movie El hombre de al lado from 2009 was filmed inside the house.
- The 2018 film La Obra Secreta tells the story of an architect who works at the Curutchet House. It shows his connection to Le Corbusier's ideas. The movie was filmed entirely in the house. It gives a great look at the inside and outside of the building.
