Cuttens, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cuttens was once a small community, or "settlement," located in Kern County, California. Today, it's no longer an active town or village. It was situated about 10 kilometers (or 10 miles) west of a place called Lost Hills.

What Was Cuttens?

Cuttens was a place where people lived for a short time, but it never grew into a large town. A "former settlement" means it was once a populated area, but now it's not officially recognized as a town or has very few residents.

A Short-Lived Post Office

For a brief period, Cuttens had its own post office. This post office opened in 1911 and helped people send and receive mail. Having a post office was very important for small communities, as it connected them to the outside world. However, the Cuttens post office only operated for two years, closing in 1913. After it closed, mail services for the area were moved to the nearby town of Lost Hills.

Who Was Charles R. Cuttens?

The name "Cuttens" was chosen to honor Charles R. Cuttens. He was the very first postmaster of the Cuttens post office. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.
