Cybele Andrianou (Greek: Κυβέλη Ανδριανού; born July 13, 1888 – died May 26, 1978) was a famous Greek actress. She was also known simply by her stage name, Cybele.

She was born in Smyrna and spent her first two years in an orphanage in Athens. When she was two and a half, she was adopted by Anastasis and Maria Andrianou. A rich Athenian lawyer's family helped her adoptive parents financially. At just 13 years old, in 1901, Cybele won her first award for acting on stage.

Today, there is a statue in Pagrati Grove, Athens, that honors her memory.

Cybele's Acting Career

Cybele was a leading actress for a theater group called Nea Skini from 1901 to 1906. During this time, she acted in ancient Greek tragedies. These were serious plays with sad endings. She performed in Alcestis by Euripides and Antigone by Sophocles.

She later became very well-known for her roles in plays by famous writers like Leo Tolstoy and Henrik Ibsen. In 1908, she started working with Gregorios Xenopoulos. He wrote a play for her called The Red Rock, which was a huge hit. Cybele's theater group performed it for many years. Xenopoulos continued to write at least one play for her every year until 1925.

Cybele also worked with Pantelis Horn from 1910 to 1934. In 1932, she teamed up with Marika Kotopouli, another famous actress. They worked together to compete with the new National Theater of Greece.

During World War II, when Germany invaded Greece, Cybele left the country. She went to the Middle East with her husband, George Papandreou, who later became the Prime Minister of Greece. After the war, she came back to Greece. She performed many roles with the National Theater. She acted alongside other famous actors like Ellie Lambeti and Dimitris Horn. In the summer of 1951, she acted in her only ancient Greek comedy. This was a funny play called Lysistrata by Aristophanes. Cybele only appeared in two films during her long career, one in 1933 and another in 1956.

Cybele's Family Life

Cybele's first husband was Mitsos Myrat. They continued to work together on stage even after they divorced. They had two children: a son named Alexandros, also called Alekos, and a daughter named Miranda. Miranda also became an actress.

Later, Cybele married a successful businessman named Kostas Theodoridis. They had a daughter named Aliki. Her third husband was George Papandreou. He later became the Prime Minister (the leader of the country's government). They had one son, also named Georgios.

Cybele passed away in 1978 when she was 89 years old. At that time, she had four children, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Her granddaughter, Kyveli Theohari, who was Miranda's daughter, also became an actress.
