History
How Cyclone Got Its Name
The name Cyclone comes from a very powerful tornado that hit the area. This big storm happened on June 14, 1880. It was one of the strongest storms ever seen in the county.
A book about the county from 1913 described the event. It said the storm was a real "cyclone" with a "funnel shaped cloud." This storm traveled over 40 miles. It caused a lot of damage in Clinton County and nearby areas. People estimated the damage was about $200,000 at that time.
The community of Cyclone was being set up as a railroad station around the same time. Since the storm passed right through this spot, the new community was named after it.
Post Office Services
A post office opened in Cyclone in 1883. This allowed people in the community to send and receive mail. The post office served the area for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1933.
