Cyclone Dirk facts for kids
Cyclone Dirk was a really big and strong storm, also known as a European windstorm. It hit many countries in Western Europe, from Spain and Portugal all the way up to Iceland. This powerful storm started on December 21, 2013, and ended on December 27, 2013. It caused a lot of damage and disruption across the affected areas.
The storm was incredibly powerful. Scientists measured very low air pressure during the storm, which shows how strong it was. On December 24, the air pressure was measured at 936.8 hectopascals (27.66 inHg) in Stornoway, on the Isle of Lewis off the northwest coast of Scotland. This was one of the lowest pressures recorded on land in the United Kingdom in many years, showing just how intense Cyclone Dirk was.
