What is a Tropical Cyclone?
A tropical cyclone is a huge, spinning storm system that forms over warm ocean waters. It brings very strong winds, heavy rain, and big waves. These storms are called different names around the world. In the Atlantic Ocean and northeast Pacific Ocean, they are called hurricanes. In the northwest Pacific, they are typhoons. In the Indian Ocean and South Pacific, they are called cyclones.
How Cyclones Form
Tropical cyclones need warm ocean water (at least 26.5°C or 80°F) to form and grow. They also need moist air and light winds high up in the atmosphere. When these conditions are just right, a low-pressure area can start to spin. As it spins faster, it pulls in more warm, moist air, making the storm stronger.
Cyclone Categories
Cyclones are put into different categories based on how fast their winds are. Category 1 is the weakest, and Category 5 is the strongest. A Category 5 storm, like Gonu, has incredibly powerful winds that can cause a lot of damage to buildings and trees.
Gonu's Journey and Impact
Super Cyclonic Storm Gonu began its life on June 1, 2007. It started as a small area of low pressure in the Arabian Sea. Over the next few days, it quickly gained strength.
Growing Stronger
By June 3, Gonu had become a very severe cyclonic storm. It kept getting stronger and stronger. On June 4, it reached its peak strength, becoming a Super Cyclonic Storm. Its winds were incredibly fast, making it a Category 5 storm. This was the first time a storm this strong had been seen in the Arabian Sea.
Hitting Oman
After reaching its strongest point, Gonu started to weaken a little. On June 6, the storm hit the eastern coast of Oman. It brought very heavy rainfall and strong winds. The storm caused widespread flooding and damaged many roads and buildings. It was the worst natural disaster Oman had experienced in modern times. The damage in Oman was estimated to be around $4.2 billion.
Impact on Iran
After leaving Oman, Gonu moved towards Iran. It hit the southeastern coast of Iran, bringing heavy rain and strong winds there too. The storm caused about $216 million in damage in Iran. Many homes and farms were affected.
After the Storm
The powerful winds and heavy rains from Cyclone Gonu caused a lot of destruction. Sadly, almost 80 people lost their lives because of the storm. Many more people were left without homes or electricity. After the storm passed, people worked hard to clean up and rebuild. The event showed how important it is for countries to be ready for powerful natural disasters.
