Cyperus dactylotes is a type of plant known as a sedge. It belongs to the Cyperaceae family, which includes many grass-like plants. This sedge is originally from Australia.

What Does It Look Like?

This sedge is a plant that lives for many years (it's a perennial). It grows from underground stems called rhizomes, which help it spread. The plant usually grows in clumps and can reach a height of about 0.4 to 1.2 meters (1.3 to 3.9 feet).

Its main stems, called culms, are smooth and can be round or have three sides. These stems are typically 45 to 100 centimeters (1.5 to 3.3 feet) tall and 2.5 to 4.5 millimeters wide. The leaves are about the same length as the stems and can be up to 6.5 millimeters wide.

Cyperus dactylotes blooms between May and July. Its flowers are green, yellow, or brown. The flower cluster, called an inflorescence, often has many branches. These branches can be up to 14 centimeters (5.5 inches) long. The flowers grow in round or half-round groups, which are about 10 to 30 millimeters (0.4 to 1.2 inches) across.

Where Does It Grow?

You can find Cyperus dactylotes in damp places across Australia. It grows in Western Australia, South Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland, and New South Wales.

It often grows in places like creek beds, along roadside drains, and other wet areas. In Western Australia, it is found in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions. Here, it prefers sandy, loamy, or clay soils. In New South Wales, it grows from the White Cliffs area up to the state's northwestern borders. It usually prefers damp spots, such as along stream banks, in sandy or clay soils.
