Cyril Stanley Rattigan was an English sportsman and soldier. He was born on August 5, 1884, and sadly passed away on November 13, 1916. He was known for playing cricket, working for the government, and serving in the British Army.
Who Was Cyril Rattigan?
Cyril was born in Camberwell, England, in August 1884. His father, Sir William Henry Rattigan, was a judge and politician. Cyril went to Harrow School, a famous school. There, he was a very good runner. He competed in sprint races and was also good at rackets, a sport similar to squash.
After Harrow, he went to Trinity College, Cambridge, a well-known university. While at Cambridge, he also enjoyed playing golf.
Cyril's Cricket Career
Cyril Rattigan played first-class cricket for Cambridge University. He played six matches between 1906 and 1907. In these games, he scored 146 runs. His highest score was 42 runs.
He was also a bowler, using his right arm to bowl at medium speed. He took 5 wickets for Cambridge University. His best bowling figures were 3 wickets for 61 runs. After leaving Cambridge in 1907, he played one more first-class match. This was for the Marylebone Cricket Club against Cambridge University in 1908. This game took place at Lord's, a very famous cricket ground.
Serving His Country
In 1909, Cyril started working for the government. He was appointed an honorary attaché, which means he helped with diplomatic work. He worked in Tangier, a city in Morocco, and went on a special mission to Fez.
Later, Cyril served in the First World War. He joined the Royal Fusiliers in September 1914 as a second lieutenant. He was promoted to lieutenant in February 1915. By September 1915, he became a captain.
He fought on the Western Front, which was a major battle area. On November 13, 1916, he was killed by a sniper. This happened near the French village of Beaumont-Hamel. He was trying to rescue a wounded friend in the dangerous area between the two armies, known as "no man's land."
Cyril's brother was Sir Henry Adolphus Rattigan. He became a very important judge in India.
