D'Onofrio is a famous Peruvian company that makes delicious treats like ice cream, chocolate, and candy. It was started way back in 1897 by a person named Pietro D'Onofrio. Today, D'Onofrio is part of Nestlé Perú, which is a branch of the big global company Nestlé.
D'Onofrio sells its products all over Peru. Their snacks and sweets are enjoyed by people of all ages, from kids to adults! One of their most popular chocolates is called Sublime, which is a small chocolate bar with peanuts. They are also well-known for their panettone, a special sweet bread sold during Christmas and Peru's Independence Day on July 28.
How D'Onofrio Started
The story of D'Onofrio began with Pietro D'Onofrio, who was an immigrant from Italy. He was born in 1859. When he was 21, he traveled to Argentina. There, he learned how to make ice cream from a family friend.
Later, Pietro D'Onofrio and his wife moved to Lima, Peru. A friend suggested Lima because its warm weather would be perfect for selling ice cream. They started their business with just one yellow ice cream cart.
D'Onofrio's business grew quickly. In 1908, they even bought a factory to make artificial ice. Soon, they expanded beyond ice cream to make chocolates using new technology from Europe. They also started making cookies and candies. Pietro D'Onofrio passed away in 1937. His son, Antonio, took over the company and added even more new products to meet the growing demand. In 1997, the D'Onofrio company became part of Nestlé.
