This is a special sweet bread sold during Christmas and Peru's Independence Day on July 28.
How D'Onofrio Started
Pietro D'Onofrio was an immigrant from Italy. He was born in 1859. When he was 21, he moved to Argentina. There, he learned how to make delicious ice cream. He learned from a family friend named Raffaele Cimarelli.
After a short trip back to Italy, Pietro returned to Argentina. His friend Cimarelli suggested he move to Lima, Peru. Cimarelli thought Lima's sunny weather would be perfect for an ice cream business.
Pietro and his wife took this advice. They moved to Lima and started their business. At first, they only had one yellow ice cream cart. In 1908, D'Onofrio bought a factory. This factory could make artificial ice. This helped them keep their ice cream cold.
Soon, D'Onofrio started making other products. They began making chocolate using new machines from Europe. They also added cookies and candies to their list. Pietro D'Onofrio passed away in 1937. His son, Antonio, took over the company. Antonio added even more new products to meet the growing demand. In 1997, the big Nestlé company bought D'Onofrio.
