Dadeland Mall is a big indoor shopping mall located in Kendall, Florida. It's in the Dadeland area, a busy part of Miami. The mall first opened on October 1, 1962. Back then, it was an open-air place with 60 stores. It was much smaller, about 535,000-square-foot (49,700 m2) in size.

Dadeland Mall is easy to find. It sits between South Dixie Highway (US-1) and the Palmetto Expressway. You can also get there by Metrorail. The Dadeland North station has a walkway right to the mall. The Dadeland South station is also very close by.

The Mall's History

When Dadeland Mall first opened, it was an outdoor shopping center. It had a big store called Burdine's. There was also a grocery store called Food Fair and a drug store called Gray Drug. A restaurant called the Summit was there too.

Growing Bigger: Early Expansions

In November 1966, another large store, Jordan Marsh, was added. This made the mall even bigger.

A huge building project started in 1969. This project made the mall twice as big! They added a new section that was fully enclosed and air-conditioned. This meant shoppers could stay cool inside. A very large Burger King called "King of the Mall" also opened. The expansion finished in 1971 when JCPenney opened as a new main store.

More Stores and Modern Updates

In 1983, the mall grew again. Two new fancy stores, Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor, were added. A food court also opened that year. It was built in an old supermarket space.

From 1984 to 1987, the mall got a big makeover. An architect named Dick Johnson helped make it look modern. Old animal statues and a drop ceiling were removed. This made the mall feel new and fresh.

One famous statue, a seahorse, was cut in half and put into a canal. Other concrete animal statues were given to Miami-Dade County. You can still see them in Dante Fascell Park in South Miami.

Lord & Taylor closed its store in 2004. Later that same year, Nordstrom took its place.

The Iconic Dadeland Tower

A special part of Dadeland Mall is its concrete tower. It has a giant letter "D" on top, which stands for Dadeland. This tower has been there since the mall first opened. It's a well-known landmark in the area.

Dadeland Mall Today

Today, the Simon Property Group helps manage Dadeland Mall. They bought half of the mall in 1997. The other half is owned by Morgan Stanley.

The mall has several large main stores, called "anchor stores." These include Florida's biggest Macy's store. There's also a Macy's Home Gallery & Kids store. Other main stores are JCPenney and Saks Fifth Avenue.

The space where Macy's Home Gallery & Kids is now used to be Jordan Marsh and then Burdine's Home Store. The space that used to be Lord & Taylor and then Nordstrom is currently empty.

The biggest restaurant at Dadeland Mall is The Cheesecake Factory.

Dadeland Mall in Movies

The outside of Dadeland Mall was shown in the 1985 movie Invasion U.S.A. starring Chuck Norris. Both the inside and outside of the mall were also in the 1990 movie Miami Blues. The mall has been updated since these movies were filmed.

In May 2020, Nordstrom announced that its store would close permanently.
