A Look at Dagüey's History
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a special territory of the U.S.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people in Puerto Rico. They found that Dagüey and a nearby community called Humatas had a total of 938 residents.
