Story of Dagashi Kashi
The story of Dagashi Kashi takes place in a small countryside town. It's about a shop called Shikada Dagashi, which sells "dagashi" (cheap Japanese candies and snacks). The Shikada family has run this shop for nine generations!
The main character is a boy named Kokonotsu Shikada. His father, Yō, wants him to take over the shop. But Kokonotsu dreams of becoming a manga artist instead.
One day, a girl named Hotaru Shidare visits the shop. She is very passionate about sweets. Hotaru wants to hire Yō for her family's big sweets company. But Yō says he won't leave unless Hotaru can convince Kokonotsu to take over the family shop.
So, Hotaru tries many different ways to persuade Kokonotsu. She uses games, stories, and riddles, all related to dagashi. The story follows their funny adventures as Hotaru tries to get Kokonotsu to change his mind.
Meet the Characters
Hotaru Shidare
Voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu (Japanese); Tabitha Ray (English) Hotaru is a very energetic and unique girl. She absolutely loves sweets and snacks! Her father owns a famous sweets company. She comes to the Shikada shop to ask Kokonotsu's dad, Yō, to work for her company. Since Yō won't leave until Kokonotsu agrees to run the shop, Hotaru makes a deal. She promises to convince Kokonotsu to take over the shop. She uses all sorts of tricks and games to try and persuade him.
Kokonotsu Shikada
Voiced by: Atsushi Abe (Japanese); Todd Haberkorn (English) Kokonotsu, also called "Coconuts," lives with his father in a small town. They run a candy shop. Kokonotsu really wants to be a manga artist. This is different from his father's wish for him to inherit the shop. The shop has been in their family for eight generations. After Hotaru arrives, he often finds himself dealing with her funny plans. His name, Kokonotsu, means "Ninth" in Japanese. This is a clever hint that he might be the ninth person to run the shop.
Saya Endō
Voiced by: Manami Numakura (Japanese); Sara Ragsdale (English) Saya is Kokonotsu's classmate and his childhood friend. She and her older twin brother, Tō, run a cafe nearby. Saya has a secret crush on Kokonotsu. At first, she is a bit worried about Hotaru being around. But soon, they become good friends. They both want Kokonotsu to stay in town. Saya is surprisingly good at traditional Japanese games, like ohajiki. She even beats Hotaru in a game of Menko once!
Tō Endō
Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki (Japanese); Justin Pate (English) Tō is Saya's older twin brother and a good friend of Kokonotsu. He is usually very relaxed and often wears a Hawaiian shirt and sunglasses. He helps Saya run their cafe, "Cafe Endō." Tō's silly actions often make his sister Saya angry. This usually ends with him getting a bruised face and broken sunglasses!
Yō Shikada
Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara (Japanese); Jeremy Inman (English) Yō is Kokonotsu's father and the current owner of the Shikada shop. He really wants his son to become the ninth owner. He hopes this will keep the family business going. He agrees to Hotaru's deal: if she can convince Kokonotsu, he will work for Hotaru's company. His name, Yō, means "Eighth" in Japanese. This is a playful way to show that he is the eighth generation to run the shop.
Hajime Owari
Voiced by: Chinatsu Akasaki (Japanese); Caitlin Glass (English) Hajime is a smart woman who sometimes struggles to keep a job. This is because she can be a bit lazy and has some unique personality traits. She ends up working at Shikada Dagashi. She gets a place to stay and food in return for her help.
Beniyutaka Shidare
Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita (Japanese); Chris Wehkamp (English) Beniyutaka is Hotaru's older brother. He manages a convenience store that recently opened across from the Shikada Dagashi shop. Beni thinks old dagashi shops are out of date. He sees Kokonotsu as a rival. This happened after Kokonotsu said that Beni's expensive cakes wouldn't sell. Kokonotsu suggested selling dagashi instead, which are popular with both kids and adults.
Tamako Tamai
Voiced by: Asami Hara (Japanese); Stephanie Young (English) Tamako is an old friend of Yō Shikada. She owns and runs an okonomiyaki shop.
