The Story of the Daggett House
This large farmhouse was built around the year 1685. It was built for a person named John Daggett, Jr. The house was built close to where his father's house used to be. Sadly, his father's first house was destroyed during a conflict known as King Philip's War.
Who Lived in the House?
After John Daggett, Jr., his oldest son, Joseph Daggett, likely inherited the house in 1707. Joseph was a doctor, a wheelwright (someone who builds and repairs wheels), and a miller (someone who operates a mill).
Later, Joseph's son, Israel, who was a cooper (someone who makes barrels), probably took over the farm in 1727. The house stayed in the Daggett family for many years. Different family members either inherited it or bought it from each other.
The last Daggett family members to own the farm were Jefferson Daggett and his oldest son, Edwin O. Daggett. They continued to farm the land until at least 1870, when Jefferson passed away. After Jefferson's death, the farm started to decline.
How the City Saved the House
In 1894, the city of Pawtucket bought the farm. It was described as a "wornout farm" at that time.
Starting in 1902, a group called the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) began to restore the house. They worked hard to bring it back to life. By 1905, the Daggett House was ready and opened as a museum.
Today, you can visit the Daggett House museum. If you want to take a tour, you usually need to arrange it beforehand. You can contact the park office during weekdays or reach out to the Pawtucket Chapter of the DAR.
