History of the Daggett House
Building the Old House
This large farmhouse was built around the year 1685. It was built for a man named John Daggett, Jr. The house was put up near where his father's house used to be. Sadly, his father's original house was destroyed during a conflict called King Philip's War. This war happened a few years before the Daggett House was built.
Who Lived Here?
Over the years, the Daggett House stayed in the Daggett family. In 1707, John Daggett, Jr.'s oldest son, Joseph Daggett, likely inherited the house. Joseph was a doctor, a wheelwright (someone who builds and repairs wheels), and a miller (someone who grinds grain into flour).
Later, in 1727, Joseph's son Israel probably took over the farm. Israel was a cooper, which means he made barrels and other wooden containers. The house continued to be passed down through different members of the Daggett family. They either inherited it or bought it from other family members.
The last Daggett family members to live and farm there were Jefferson Daggett and his oldest son, Edwin O. Daggett. They kept farming the land until at least 1870, when Jefferson passed away. After Jefferson's death, the farm started to decline. In 1894, the city of Pawtucket bought the property.
The House Today
The Daggett House was in need of repair when the city bought it. Starting in 1902, a group called the Daughters of the American Revolution began to restore the house. They worked hard to bring it back to its original condition.
In 1905, the Daggett House opened as a museum! Today, you can visit this historic house to learn about its past. If you want to take a tour, you usually need to arrange it in advance.
