Daijiro Takakuwa (born August 10, 1973) is a former Japanese football player. He was a talented goalkeeper. He played for many famous Japanese clubs during his career. He also had the honor of playing for the Japan national team.

Playing Career Highlights

Daijiro Takakuwa was born in Tokyo, Japan. He started his football journey after finishing high school. He became a professional player in 1992.

Early Years at Yokohama Marinos

Takakuwa joined Yokohama Marinos in 1992. This team later became known as Yokohama F. Marinos. During his first few years, it was tough for him to play in matches. This was because other great goalkeepers were already on the team. These included Shigetatsu Matsunaga and Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi.

Success with Kashima Antlers

In 1996, Takakuwa moved to Kashima Antlers. This was a big step in his career. By 1998, he became the main goalkeeper for the team. That year, Kashima Antlers won the J1 League championship. They also won the 1998–99 Asian Cup Winners' Cup in Asia.

The year 2000 was amazing for Takakuwa and Kashima Antlers. They won all three major titles in Japan. These were the J1 League, the J.League Cup, and the Emperor's Cup. Because of his great performance, Takakuwa was chosen for the J1 League Best Eleven team. This means he was one of the best players in the league that year.

In 2001, his playing time at Kashima Antlers started to decrease. Another goalkeeper, Hitoshi Sogahata, began to play more.

Moving to Other Clubs

After leaving Kashima Antlers, Takakuwa played for a few other teams.

  • In 2002, he joined Tokyo Verdy.
  • In 2003, he moved to Vegalta Sendai. He was the regular goalkeeper for Vegalta Sendai from 2004 until July 2006. He played 123 league games for them.
  • In 2007, he returned to Yokohama F. Marinos. This was 11 years after he first played for them. However, he did not play many matches during this second time.
  • His last club was Tokushima Vortis in 2009. He retired from professional football at the end of the 2009 season.

Over his career, Daijiro Takakuwa played in 225 league matches.

National Team Career
